Oh: Please talk about your teachers who influenced your life of Tae Kwon Do.

Kang: I want to introduce Samyun Nam. He is five feet tall and graduated only from elementary school, during the Japanese occupational days. I initially thought he was an ignorant man when I began learning martial arts from him. However, his teaching method profoundly helped me all my life. He had two philosophies: First, achieving one's goal cannot be accomplished easily. He always said, "When you fall down, pick yourself up. Fall down again, pick yourself up again and again until you achieve your goal." Second, there is no success without effort.. For example, he was good at breaking. He said, "if you are breaking bricks because you have natural strength and skill, then it amounts to nothing." True learning comes by accomplishing what is thought to be impossible for oneself to do. He shared such wisdom with me. I highly recommend master Samyun Nam.
The other one is Kyeyoon Lee, a principal of Judo University. I was not a formal student, but I attended his lectures. Every action he did, every word he said was a very big lesson. He said, "A successful master of martial art does not mean that he is highly educated or rich, but that he has many great disciples." For example, Buddha had his disciples, Jesus had his disciples, and the disciples have carried on their spirits. He emphasized this. He taught us to make great effort to train good disciples. Such wise teaching influenced me for a very long time.
